According to a report from Reuters, the Mexican government, despite being quite left-wing, is worried that President Joe Biden’s lax and permissive immigration policies are causing a spike in illegal immigration and are empowering Mexico’s notoriously violent drug cartels and other criminal groups that help people get across the border.

Though often the source of much illegal immigration into the U.S., it should not come as a surprise that Mexico is worried about this problem. After all, the migrant caravans of which we have heard so much in recent years tend to form in either Central or South America and must therefore make their way through Mexico before reaching the U.S., leaving chaos and destruction in their wake.

This latest migrant caravan, for instance, originated in Honduras.

Illegal Immigration Explodes

In February 2021 alone, the Border Patrol has already detained more than 100,000 migrants seeking to come into the U.S. through the southern border. This number is the highest February total since 2006.

Unsurprisingly, Biden’s permissive rhetoric has been the cause of this upsurge. Biden has promised to grant amnesty to all illegals who are already in the country. He has also promised that those seeking to enter would swiftly be granted U.S. citizenship.

One does not need to speculate that these promises have encouraged migrants to stream into the U.S. in gargantuan numbers, for the migrants themselves say so. When asked, the people in these caravans have explicitly cited Biden’s guarantees — specifically his guarantees to help these people find employment — as a major factor motivating their decision to attempt to enter the U.S. Indeed, many migrants have been seen wearing Biden-Harris T-shirts.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said of Biden and his relationship to the migrants, “They see him as the migrant president, and so many feel they’re going to reach the United States. We need to work together to regulate the flow because this business can’t be tackled from one day to the next.”

Since Mexican drug cartels and other criminal organizations provide the primary means for many people to reach the U.S., they have seen an extraordinary increase in their activity since Biden took office. These organizations frequently extort, intimidate, physically harm and even kill people who cannot afford to pay for their human trafficking “services.”

The Reuters report says that the cartels have created increasingly sophisticated operations with extensive infrastructure that helps them outwit Mexican authorities.

The cartels have even advised some people to lie to local Mexican authorities that they have been the victims of crime, thus allowing them to fraudulently claim asylum status in the U.S.

Mexican authorities also fear that migrants from outside of Mexico, which make up an increasing proportion of the total, could bring coronavirus with them and increase case totals in Mexico. Since they are unable to control the situation and the Biden administration appears to be unable to work with them, the Mexican government finds itself in a dire situation.
