BLM has recently sent legal threats and cease-and-desist orders to a local New York-based BLM activist whom the national group claims has been using their name illegally.
Even better is the fact that not long ago, the leader of this New York-based organization, Hank Newsome, called for an audit of national BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors’ personal finance after it emerged that she purchased a $1.4 million mansion in an exclusive and mostly-white neighborhood in California.
Further revelations later showed that Cullors has gone on a massive home-buying spree, spending about $3.2 million on massive homes. It’s not clear where Cullors got the money to purchase such swanky properties, which makes Newsome’s calls for an audit all the more worth heeding.
The fact that the legal threats against Newsome came so soon after he called for this audit is also revealing.
Is BLM Just a Cash Cow for Its Founders?
Hank Newsome runs an organization known as BLM Greater New York. On Sunday, April 11, he called for an audit of the personal finances of the co-founder of the BLM Global Network Foundation, Patrisse Cullors.
According to recent reports, Cullors has purchased a number of expensive properties in recent years, including a $415,000 “custom ranch” near Atlanta and a $1.4 million mansion in a suburb of Los Angeles that was already alluded to.
According to a spokesman for the BLM Global Network Foundation, Newsome “is not and has never been part of the official Black Lives Matter organization, but continues to use BLM’s name after sending him multiple cease and desist letters.”
Newsome, while speaking to the Daily Caller, wryly commented on this affair by saying, “So the issue has become my affiliation and not the use of funds… interesting.”
Even more absurd is the fact that the BLM Global Network Foundation does not have any trademark rights over the name “Black Lives Matter.” In fact, the US Patent and Trademark Office rejected the attempts of Cullors’ organization to trademark the phrase on six different occasions, so it is not clear where the legal authority for her to threaten Newsome comes from.
This saga is unfolding at the same time as many other local chapters of the official BLM organization have begun voicing complaints that the many millions that have been donated to the group through various sources have not been apportioned either fairly or transparently.
In the end, BLM, whatever its pretensions to coming from the grassroots, is an elite-driven organization that is ardently supported by virtually every powerful corporation or other prestigious organization in the country. It is only fitting that the same corruption and self-serving behavior that has afflicted America’s elite class to such a shocking degree should spread to BLM as well.
