Tragic Death of Man at the Hands of Police Sparks Outrage
The widow of Daniel Shaver is leaning on TikTok to advocate for police reform. Laney Sweet is using the popular social media video service to bring attention to the tragic death of her husband at the hands of a police shooting.
Details of Shaver’s Death
Shaver was shot to death by police in Mesa, Arizona, in January of 2016. The police responded to a call that a man was pointing a rifle out of a hotel window. Officer Philip Brailsford arrived at the La Quinta Inn and Suites and proceeded to shoot Shaver in the hallway of the hotel.
While Shaver did have a gun at the hotel, it was actually a pellet gun that he needed for his job in pest control. He was unarmed when Brailsford shot him.
Officer Brailsford lost his job at the Mesa Police Department as a result of the shooting. The official reason for his firing was that he was in violation of department policy when he shot Shaver. Although he was charged with second-degree murder, Brailsford was later acquitted.
In Sweet’s TikTok, she details how new video evidence shows Shaver begging for his life. Sweet notes that not only was Shaver unarmed at the time of the shooting, but he also was not even wearing shoes.
Sweet already has over 17,000 followers on TikTok, using this platform to bring awareness to the need for police reform. She points out that she can barely make ends meet for her and her two children while Brailsford is a free man enjoying a pension for the rest of his life.
