In the minds of many, actress Rose McGowan’s name is now probably most strongly associated with the #MeToo movement. The movement and its associated hashtag rose to prominence in late 2017 as revelations emerged that prominent Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinsten was sexually abusing young actresses and inducing them to have sex with him in exchange for furthering their careers.

As this story blew up and many other prominent figures in Hollywood and elsewhere were shown to be engaging in similar kinds of sexual impropriety, McGowan was one of the leading voices defending the rights of abused women.

McGowan has also criticized the Democratic Party on quite a few occasions in her public statements. It’s well-known that the vast majority of those in Hollywood identify as Democrats. Conservative actors and movie producers are few and far between.

This has left many of her fans confused not only about where McGowan truly stands politically, but about why she seems to be connecting her criticisms of Democrats for her advocacy in favor of abused women.

On top of all of that, she made McGowan made a recent appearance on Fox News where she spoke to host Tammy Bruce about these and other issues, and it’s only left people wondering more than ever whether she’s really a Republican.

Is Rose McGowan a Republican?

Of everything that she said during her Fox News appearance, the following was easily the most surprising and controversial: “I am not here to make people feel bad about their political choices. But I am here to say that you might be in a cult too if you don’t know the signs. And I do believe Democrats, most especially, are in a deep cult that they really don’t know about and aren’t really aware of.”

Since there are many associations between prominent figures in the Democratic Party and the many moguls, producers, actors and other Hollywood bigwigs that have been embroiled in #MeToo scandals, McGowan’s outrage might be understandable, but it still rubbed some people the wrong way and left them confused.

In her view, though, McGowan is just speaking out against what she sees as groupthink. Some, however, are still not happy. In particular, McGowan’s remark that Democrats are “against changing the world for the better” sparked particular consternation on social media.

Naturally, things like this have led people to suspect that Rose McGowan may be a closet Republican. And indeed, speaking on a podcast, she appeared to confirm these rumors. She described how, earlier, she had made a $200 bet with her brother that she could successfully pretend to be a Republican on social media for three months.

But then, in a video posted to Twitter, she said, “If you lean too deep into anything and refuse to hear anything else, and you’re serving a master that there’s no evidence is serving you, then maybe, you’re in a cult.” She made clear that this applied to Republicans as well as to Democrats.

So, where does Rose McGowan stand politically? Who knows? All we can say with confidence is that she seems to march to the beat of her own drum.
