Dozens of Nations Work Together to Pull Off Raid
Hundreds of criminals have been arrested thanks to the effort of dozens of nations working together to execute a massive crime sting.
Details of Crime Sting
The crime sting happened in the early morning hours of Tuesday all over the world. The operation was led by law enforcement officials in the U.S., Australia, and Europe. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) played an instrumental role in the sting.
According to Reuters, the operation nabbed suspects located throughout the globe, including in South America, Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East. The sting was focused on the global narcotics trade and organized crime gangs.
By the time the raid was over, over 800 people had been arrested. In addition, approximately $148 million in cash and an abundance of drugs were also confiscated by law enforcement.
History of Operation
The operation was the brainchild of the FBI and law enforcement in Australia. The plans were set in motion back in 2018. The sting involved the distribution of encrypted phones to bust the criminals. Over 12,000 phones were distributed as part of the plan.
By monitoring the communication between the suspected criminals for over 18 months, law enforcement was able to execute the sting and potentially save over 100 lives in the process.
Why This Is Important
It is a proven fact that illegal drugs are the cause of many social and criminal issues, including domestic violence and child neglect. By getting to the root of the problem by busting up the drug rings, officials are hopeful that this sting will save many from tragedy.
