Every day, millions of people post pictures of themselves online, talk about themselves, or brag about their exploits. Sometimes, such things rub people the wrong way. Sometimes, certain posts may appeal to certain values that people consider to be old or outmoded. One father named Chris Crawford found this out recently after he took to social media to brag to the world about his 14-year-old son’s indefatigable work ethic.

A Kid Who Works “Every Day”

Crawford’s Facebook post read as follows: “HUGE shout out to this kid of mine, 14 years old and has a PT job at Burger King. Not only does he work every day he can, including weekends when most kids are out enjoying their summer, he goes in early and stays late almost every time he works. He loves every minute of it.”

Crawford then said that his son was working to save up money for a car and concluded his post by chiding other people: “Some of y’all lazy, grown ass people out there should take notes!”

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with a father being proud of his son and working to instill certain values in him, but many people felt that Crawford had taken things too far with his boy. Among those who disapproved of the post, the basic sentiment was that Crawford’s son was not being allowed to enjoy his childhood.

Still, other people complained about child labor laws and wondered whether what the father was doing was even legal. Still, others questioned whether the boy was truly working part-time hours or whether the father was simply exaggerating how much his son worked in order to show off.

Despite all of this, the boy and his father did have their supporters. Many applauded the boy for his initiative and his moxie. They applauded the boy’s maturity and willingness to take his life into his own hands at a young age.

This is a fascinating story of older values of hard work taking root. While it does raise some serious issues, it’s something for the internet to debate and chew on — just like countless other things.
