Britney Spears is one of the most recognizable pop stars in the world. We’ve all had “Baby One More Time” stuck in our heads at some point in our lives, so we all know who she is.

What many of us may not know, however, is that Britney Spears has been living under extraordinary difficulties for the last few years.

It may seem odd to say this, considering that Spears has countless millions of dollars and is a household name, but it’s true.

In fact, for the last 13 years, Spears has been suffering in relatively quiet desperation under an extremely oppressive conservatorship that has essentially robbed her of nearly all control over her life and personal affairs.

And after enduring this for 13 years, she has finally decided that she has had enough.

Countless people on social media — including a great many celebrities — have rushed to her support.

Leave Britney Alone!

You may remember that back in 2007, Britney Spears went on something of a bender. She infamously shaved her head, and the world thought that she had gone crazy.

The truth is, the pressures of fame, her total lack of personal privacy and the profound control that her father exercised over her life had finally gotten to her, and she rebelled in any way she could.

This didn’t work out for her, however. The following year, in 2008, her father and his lawyers were able to get Britney declared mentally impaired, using her outburst as “evidence.”

She was placed in a mental hospital against her will and put on psychotropic drugs.

Then, her father and his lawyers placed her under a conservatorship. This is a legal arrangement whereby a person judged to be mentally incompetent has virtually all of her affairs entrusted to someone else. Spears’ father and his lawyers thus have tight-fisted control over all of her money. Her work and performing schedule are under his control. She had to relinquish custody of her sons. She can hardly make any life decisions for herself. She can’t even decide to get married again or remove her IUD so that she can have another child.

But now, after 13 years, Britney has finally had enough.

On June 23, during a court hearing, she asked a judge to end her conservatorship.

Celebrities, from Justin Timberlake and Mariah Carey to Tinashe and Halsey, all took to social media to voice their support for Britney. Actress Rose McGowan even made a surprise, last-minute appearance on the popular news show “Tucker Carlson Tonight” on June 23 to inform millions of people about the issue. #FreeBritney started trending on Twitter.

Let’s hope Britney succeeds. No one should have to endure the kinds of indignities she has endured.
