A California Uber Eats driver has been stabbed to death in his own car whilst making a delivery, with a 17-year-old girl the prime suspect in the investigation.
The suspect was arraigned virtually on Friday, pleading not guilty in the juvenile court via her attorney.
Her hearing took place on Friday, three days after the alleged stabbing incident took place.
However, prosecutor Cherie Somerville informed KNSD that the district attorney’s office will be filing a request with Superior Court Judge Espana to have the suspect tried as an adult due to the nature of the crime.
The teenage girl, whose identity remains unknown to the media, stands accused of murdering Raquel Spohn Wehber, a 58-year-old Uber Eats driver, close to Lanoitan Avenue near 18th Street in National City, a shy drive away from San Diego.
Spohn Wehber was allegedly stabbed numerous times in her car and died at the scene.
Fox 5 reported that witnesses informed officers that they saw a woman running away from the scene, so officers followed a trail of blood up to a mobile home, where they found the girl and arrested her on suspicion of murder.
The motive for the murder, as well as the potential relationship between the suspect and the victim remains unclear.
Present at the arraignment on Friday was the parents of the suspect and the husband of the victim, who listened in on proceedings.
Judge Espana ruled that the suspect must remain in custody for the remainder of the investigation, with her due to appear back in court on July 20th for a readiness hearing.
The deadly stabbing on Tuesday comes after a string of attacks on Uber Eats drivers throughout the country.
In the last two months, two teenage girls were arrested in Washington DC in connection of a brutal death of an Uber Eats driver during a failed car hijacking.
The two girls pleaded guilty in court.
One of the girls, aged 13, was sentenced on Tuesday to a juvenile detention centre, and she will not be released until her 21st birthday.
The other girl, aged 15, was sentenced to the same fate back in June.
