Against the backdrop of a still-raging COVID-19 pandemic and economic uncertainty for many Americans, former President Barack Obama is organizing a massive party for his 60th birthday at his $12 million mansion on Martha’s Vineyard Island, which will be packed with stars guests.
All the stars on the guest list, who reportedly include George Clooney and Oprah Winfrey, will have to provide negative COVID-19 tests in order to attend.
At least that’s one thing the former Democrat President has taken into account when deciding to lavishly entertain himself and his celebrity friends while countless American families are struggling and the number of coronavirus cases is spiking again because of the more contagious delta variant.
A big event
Obama’s party is taking place on his birthdate, August 4, in the 30-acre oceanside mansion on the exclusive island off the coast of Massachusettes, which the family bought in 2019 for $11.75 million.
The Obamas have a combined net worth of $70 million.
“It’s going to be big,” a source told The Hill with respect to the scope of Barack Obama’s 60th birthday party.
Obama has been known for throwing himself “legendary” birthday parties.
When he turned 50 back in 2011, the then Democrat President hosted a huge celebration at the White House, which was reported to have continued into the next day.
Back then the star attendees included again Oprah Winfrey, actor Tom Hanks, singers Stevie Wonder and Jay-Z, NBA legends Charles Barkley and Grant Hill, comedian Chris Law, among others, plus a large number of political figures and Obama’s friends for the University of Chicago Law School.
At the time, there were reports that the then-president had a separate 50th birthday party in his Chicago home, doubling up as a fundraiser for his campaign for reelection.
Tickets for it reportedly cost $35,800 per couple.
The Martha’s Vineyard beachfront property, where Obama’s 60th birthday celebration is going to take place, was sold by Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck.
The 7,000-foot mansion, which has seven bedrooms, originally had a listing price of nearly $15 million but the Obamas got a huge discount of more than $3 million.
The mansion off the coast of Massachusetts has a boathouse, its own private beach, lots of land, an outdoor fire pit, a swimming pool, and vaulted ceilings with two wings.
A listing agent has previously described it as a “remarkable home” with privacy as its “key feature.
Local media reports in February said the Obama family was doing renovations to the place, perhaps in preparation for the upcoming massive 60th birthday party of the former Democrat president.
The Obama family decided to buy the mansion after renting it for one summer.
During Obama’s presidency, the family spent seven summers on Martha’s Vineyard.
In 2018, they sold their summer home there for the price of $15 million.
So Obama’s 60th is going to be fabulous for those in attendance.
Whether tremendous lavishness on part of a major public figure such as a former president is appropriate at a time of spiking pandemic infections and economic struggle is a whole other story.
