Former President Barack Obama is set to host a star-studded 60th birthday party at his $12 million Martha’s Vineyard mansion this Saturday, yet the issue has created a lot of controversy and public opinions on the matter.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was forced to defend the former President in her briefing on Monday, after Fox News’ Peter Doocy questioned the message that the Obama’s were sending to the American people by holding a big event in the middle of Delta variant surge.
English journalist Piers Morgan also criticised the former President’s decision to hold a party during the pandemic, labeling him as being “selfish” and “hypocritical.”
Press Secretary Jen Psaki was forced to defend her former boss on Monday, after Peter Doocy questioned the message that he was sending to the public by hosting his own birthday party.
She explained to the Fox News reporter what the current CDC guidance was, that being that those who are attending indoor events must wear a mask if they are in a high Covid infection rate area, and she pointed out that the Obama’s were hosting their party outside on the waterfront of their 7,000 square foot property.
However, Doocy pushed the Press Secretary for more answers, stating that the Obama birthday bash could lead to a super spreader event, given the high infection rate of the new Delta variant.
However, Psaki reiterated her statement of the CDC guidance, before requesting that the reporter ask the Obama’s what their protocols would be for their event on Saturday.
Doocy then stated that President Obama may be sending the wrong message to Americans, and may encourage Americans to hold their own parties during the pandemic.
This is an issue that Psaki denied, stating that President Obama was a big advocate of the Covid guidelines, and that everyone else should be following the guidance.
Piers Morgan’s comments
English journalist didn’t hold back when it came to criticising the former President, but he also made some very interesting points.
He opened his column in the Daily Mail by questioning what reaction the Democrats and the “liberals” would have if former President Donald Trump were to host a 500-strong birthday party in the middle of the pandemic.
He expanded on this point by assuming their reaction, stating that critics of President Trump would label him as “selfish” and “reckless,” whilst stating that a former President should be “setting an example” for the American public to follow.
He then applies these points to President Obama but, since it’s Obama, he receives absolutely no criticism for his actions.
Morgan then dived into his own experience with Covid, having recently contracted an infection whilst attending the European Championship final in London last month, an event that saw 60,000 people attend.
Morgan states that, despite being fully vaccinated, he and “at least 15 other people” that he knew caught the disease and were ill for many weeks.
He stated that it will only take one infected individual at Obama’s birthday bash to turn it into a super spreader event, with the Delta variant currently surging through the country.
He called for the former President to call off his party, especially after Dr. Anthony Fauci warned that “things are only going to get worse.”
