Biden Team Fights Back Against DeSantis
In what is turning into a major political battle, the administration of President Joe Biden is now stepping into the conflict in Florida over school mask mandates.
Background of Conflict
The conflict began when Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis mandated that no school district could require students to wear masks when they returned to in-person learning. However, many of the state’s most urban school districts went against the governor’s wishes and decided to require the use of masks in schools.
DeSantis also threatened to withhold funding for the districts and the salaries of administrators that did not comply with the state’s ban on mask mandates.
Biden Administration Response
The Biden administration did not waste time in inserting itself into the state’s business. Late last week, U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona sent a letter to DeSantis and Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran advising them that the federal government would provide the necessary funding and salary costs to districts that defied the state’s ban on masks in schools.
The president has been clear where he stands on this issue. He repeatedly points out that the exponential rise in COVID-19 cases is happening in states with low vaccination rates and no mask mandates. For example, Florida and Texas alone are responsible for approximately one-third of all new cases.
Biden is asking DeSantis to stand out of the way of people who are trying to do the right thing by wearing masks to protect others. However, DeSantis is firing back by saying that Biden needs to stand out of the way of him trying to govern his state.
