Violent crime rates against Asian Americans have begun to ‘skyrocket’ in recent weeks in Oakland, California, as the Lunar New Year approaches right around the corner.
Oakland’s Chinatown area has experienced the biggest increase, with numerous assaults and robberies being conducted on the elderly population, according to the Oakland Police Department.
The OPD have now said that they will be investing more time and resources into the Chinatown area before the Lunar New Year celebrations take place on Friday.
So, what’s going on?
Reports and video footage from the streets have started to emerge online and through the Police Department, hinting at a horrific increase in violent crime towards the Asian American residents in Oakland’s Chinatown.
One such incident saw Yahya Muslim, a 28-year-old man, assault three Asian Americans in a very short space of time, including a 91-year-old man.
Video footage, which was released by the OPD last week, shows Muslim steadily walking up behind the elderly man before shoving him in the back, causing him to fall to the ground hard.
The man, who has not been named, was taken to hospital shortly after and was treated for his injuries.
Police then claim that shortly after this first assault, the suspect approached a 55-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man who were chatting and walking together in the street.
The suspect allegedly kicked them both in the back, causing them both to collapse onto the ground.
The woman is believed to have lost consciousness upon hitting the ground, whilst the man received minor injuries.
The pair were both treated at the hospital.
This horrific assault was brought into the mainstream by actors Daniel Dae Kim and Daniel Wu, who offered up $25,000 to anyone who could provide information that would lead to the arrest of Yahya Muslim.
Nancy O’Malley, the district attorney for Alameda County announced on Monday that Muslim had been arrested and charged for his assault on the three victims.
The Oakland Police Department has also revealed they have obtained footage of another incident in Chinatown.
According to reports, a man by the name of Deveion Lamont Byrd, allegedly robbed an elderly, 80-year-old woman in the streets, before running off with $200.
Police also confirm that Byrd is a prime suspect in numerous other robberies that have taken place in recent months throughout Chinatown.
Footage has also emerged online depicting another robbery, this time of a 70-year-old woman.
The video depicts the woman, who was returning home from the bank, being assaulted and robbed by three men, whose identities remain unknown.
Oakland Police have now promised a higher investment of time and resources to prevent any further increases in violent crime against the Asian American community in Chinatown, promising to apprehend and arrest all suspects.
