In its ongoing and relentless effort to erase every trace of the Trump Administration’s existence from history, the Biden Administration has reportedly canceled a plan put in place by Trump to track the influence of the Chinese Communist Party in the American education system.

Trump’s Rule to Track Chinese Influence in US Education

This rule was originally submitted at the very end of last year and was titled “Establishing Requirement for Student and Exchange Visitor Program Certified Schools to Disclose Agreement With Confucius Institutes and Classrooms.”

According to the rule, both K-12 schools and colleges which are certified to have foreign exchange programs of any kind with other foreign schools are required to disclose all contacts, partnerships, and financial transactions between them and Confucius Institutes or Classrooms.

Confucius Institutes are any kind of public schools or universities in China which have partnerships with schools in other countries. US officials are especially alarmed by these organizations because they are both funded and staffed by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

The Problem With Chinese Involvement in American Education

When speaking last year about the subject of Chinese influence in American education, former Secretary of State and CIA Director Mike Pompeo said, “Confucius Institutes are funded by the PRC and are part of the Chinese Communist Party’s global influence and propaganda apparatus.”

This propaganda apparatus appears to have had some measure of success in influencing American educators in ways that benefit the Chinese Communist Party.

For instance, Charles Lieber, a Harvard chemistry professor and pioneer in the field of nanotechnology research, was charged by the DOJ with making false statements about his connections to the Wuhan Institute of Technology.

He has been accused of trading money for scientific knowledge with the Chinese and then lying about it to authorities.

Now that the Biden Administration has axed this Trump-era rule, some US officials worry that Chinese influence over American college campuses and other schools will step up and that this may result in theft of critical scientific knowledge, or worse.
