Several key Democrats in Congress are either openly calling for stopping the sale of US weapons to Israel or considering moves to that end, against the backdrop of Israeli security forces’ fight against escalating attacks by Palestinian terrorists.
Meanwhile, what is described as the far-left wing of the Democratic Party known for its pronounced pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli positions has been dubbed “the Hamas Caucus” by some Republican members of the House.
In the past few days, Palestinian terrorists have fired more than 3,100 rockets against Israel, although about 450 of those have actually fallen inside the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli Defense Force has reacted by killing hundreds of terrorists, including senior Hamas figures, and by destroying miles of underground tunnels used by them.
In times of economic crisis, Democrats want to cancel a multi-million-dollar contract!
House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Gregory Meeks (D-NY) is the most crucial Congressman presently mulling sending a letter to President Joe Biden to block the sale of American precision weapons to Israel in a deal worth USD 735 million, according to a report by The Times of Israel.
The US-Israeli precision weapons deal in question was reported by The Washington Post earlier this month.
It revealed that the White House told Congress about it on May 5, which was five days before the current Israeli-Palestinian violence erupted, first with Palestinians’ rallies in East Jerusalem later followed by rocket attacks against Israel out of Gaza by the Hamas terrorist group.
In a meeting of the Democratic members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Monday, several of them reportedly said they hadn’t been made aware of the new deal for selling US precision weapons to Israel.
According to the report, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) was one of the Committee members demanding the blocking of the sale.
Omar is well-known for her anti-Semitic stance and vocal support for the Palestinian cause.
She also called for stopping the arms deal with Israel in a Twitter post.
Another pronounced anti-Semite and backer of the Palestinians, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), who is not a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has also taken to Twitter to urge Biden to stop the sale of weapons used “to kill children and families”.
Not all Democrats are anti-Israel
Other Democratic members of the Committee, however, have expressed backing for Israel, unlike their party’s far-left wing.
Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL) on Twitter condemned the “Hamas terrorists” for continuing to kill “innocent civilians” in Israel.
He also expressed his shock that “some condemn Israel rather than the terrorists.”
Deutch stated, “I stand with Israel.”
Besides Omar and Tlaib, the far-left “squad of the Democratic Party is also reported to include Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY) and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (MA).
At least two Republican members of the House lambasted the far-left anti-Israeli Democrats dubbing them “the Hamas Caucus”, and denouncing them for urging America to leave Israel precisely at a time when the latter is under attack.
Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) sarcastically said on Twitter it was “too bad” there wasn’t a “Hamas Caucus”.
“Oh wait – there is one – it’s called ‘The Squad,’” he wrote.
Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) commented in a tweet that if the House actually had a “Hamas Caucus”, blocking the sale of US precision weapons to Israel would be “its top priority.”
