Another Example of Wasteful Spending by Congress

It is no secret that Congress is notorious for stuffing ridiculous pet projects into massive bills in order to pass them under the radar. The current proposed COVID-19 relief bill has been no exception. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi actually tried to slide $140 million in rail project funding into the bill that is now up for vote in the Senate after passing through the House along party lines.

Details of the Funding

The funding was for a rail project located near Pelosi’s district in California. Republicans rightly said that the bill was wasteful, striking it from the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package proposed by President Joe Biden. Republican Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming blasted the rail project, calling it Pelosi’s “tunnel of love.”

Pelosi’s Defense

Those on Pelosi’s team defended the project by saying that it was acceptable to ask for more government funding in light of the fact that mass transit usage has decreased significantly as a result of the ongoing pandemic. However, the Senate parliamentarian did not agree with this assessment. As such, the funding was not allowed to be included in the package because it was considered to be unnecessary “pork.”

Latest on COVID-19 Stimulus Package

The House passed the new round of stimulus last Saturday before sending it on to the Senate. The Senate is expected to vote on the bill in the coming days as Democrats race to put the finishing touches on the bill. It now looks as if the bill will not be voted on until this weekend.
