Former President Barack Obama has defied official CDC guidance, after it was announced he will be hosting a 500-strong 60th birthday party at his family’s $12 million mansion in Martha’s Vineyard, amid a nationwide increase in Covid cases.

The former President, who turns 60 on August 4th, will be hosting the birthday bash at his 7,000-square-foot mansion, with nearly 500 guests confirmed to be in attendance, including celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg and George Clooney.

There will also be 200 staff in attendance to ensure the event runs smoothly.

Sources close to Obama’s state that all guests will need to be tested and vaccinated, with the soiree being held outdoors on the property’s 30-acre waterfront.

The source also confirmed that there will be a “Covid coordinator”, whatever that means, to ensure all guidelines are followed properly.

The CDC guidance

Obama’s birthday bash goes directly against the advice that was offered by Francis Collins, the director of the National Institutes of Health, who stated on CNN on Sunday that large parties should be avoided throughout the pandemic.

Collins stated that small house gatherings, of around six or 7 fully vaccinated people, would be ok to go ahead without the need for masks, however, he stated that parties of 100 people are unneeded, and are impossible to understand the vaccination status of every guest involved.

His statement comes after the Fourth of July holiday saw a huge spike in cases around the country, especially in the nearby Provincetown.

The New York Times reported that the community was crowded with over 60,000 people during the holiday period, with officials initially unbothered by the events as the area has one of the highest rates of vaccination rates in the country.

Since the Fourth of July, 965 cases have been traced back to the gatherings, with 238 being residents from Provincetown.

Only seven people have been hospitalized, with zero deaths reported.

The Obama party

Former President Obama’s 60th birthday party will take place next weekend, at the $12 million home that both he and Michelle bought back in 2019.

The home includes seven bedrooms, with an in-ground pool and a 30-acre waterfront.

The party will be attended by numerous celebrities, alongside a live performance from Pearl Jam.

President Joe Biden will not be in attendance, as per an announcement from the White House, however, he is set to catch up with his former political partner “soon to properly welcome him to the over 60 club.”

In terms of gifts, the former President is set to encourage guests to “consider giving to programs that work to support boys and young men of color,” as well as giving to programs that will help “equip the next generation of emerging community leaders.”

The party is set to be paid for in full out of the Obama family pocket.
