Will Pelosi Keep the Title of Speaker of the House?

Is Nancy Pelosi’s bid for Speaker of the House in danger? On Sunday, two incoming Democratic representatives refused to commit to backing Pelosi’s bid to retain her title as the highest-ranking member of the House of Representatives. Cori Bush and Jamaal Bowman have both indicated that they need to consult with their constituents before deciding how to land on this important issue.

Refusal to Commit

Both representative-elects were interviewed by CNN’s Dana Bash. The anchor repeatedly pressed the two lawmakers on their plans to decide whether or not to re-elect Pelosi for her fourth term in this vital position on Capitol Hill. The progressive Bowman is representing a district in the state of New York, while Bush hails from St. Louis, Missouri.

Bowman Dodges Question About Pelosi

When pressed by Bash about his decision to get behind Pelosi, Bowman said that he is more concerned about pushing through issues such as Medicare for all and a jobs guarantee program. Like Bush, he only said he would consult with his community when deciding if he will vote to continue Pelosi’s tenure in the House.

Bush Aims to Serve on Judiciary Committee

Bush prides herself on being an activist, suggesting that she should be appointed to serve on the House Judiciary Committee as a result of what she calls her “lived experiences.” Bush is leaning on her experience of having lived through the Ferguson riots and other movements and protests. Despite not having experience in the field of law, Bush has already received nominations to serve on this committee.
