According to the National Park Service, the Washington Monument will be closed until January 25th, five days after Inauguration Day. This will happen because of what the NPS refers to as “credible threats” that violent protests may occur on that day.

Neither the NPS nor the FBI has been terribly specific about from where they have received information about these alleged threats or what exactly it is that makes them “credible,” but they have decided to move ahead with the decision regardless.

Washington, D.C., Will Be Closed Off

On its website, the NPS declared, “Groups involved in the January 6, 2021 riots at the US Capitol continue to threaten to disrupt the 59th presidential inauguration on January 20, 2021. This includes the set up and execution of inaugural events, which occur in several park areas. In response, the National Park Service will suspend tours. These temporary closures may be extended if the conditions persist.”

The FBI has joined in on the chorus, saying in the bulletin that was obtained by ABC News that, “armed protests are being planned at all 50 state capitols from 16 January through at least 20 January, and at the US Capitol from 17 January through 20 January.”

Neither the FBI nor the NPS deigned to explain where it received this information and what, in their minds, made it credible.

District Mayor Muriel Bowser has asked that the Department of Homeland Security deny people demonstration permits on Inauguration Day. Also, Joe Biden’s inaugural parade has been canceled, with COVID-19 cited as the reason.

Restrictions of this kind are unprecedented for presidential inaugurations, but politicos insist that the violence on January 6, in which one unarmed woman was shot dead by the police when they fired at her through a door inside the Capitol building, justifies this kind of reaction.

Our Rulers Continue to Dig Their Heels In

What really happened on January 6th, though terribly unfortunate, is far from clear. For one thing, many videos have emerged indicating that the instigators of the violence on that day were likely Antifa and BLM members rather than Trump supporters. Specifically, there are videos showing Trump supporters spotting Antifa members and preventing them from causing trouble and other videos showing Antifa members passing out weapons to people.

For another thing, President Trump made very clear in his speech on the 6th that he wanted the protests at the Capitol building to be peaceful, calling on his supporters to “peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.” The claim that the president “incited an insurrection,” therefore, is absurdly false.

Our ruling class and its lackeys in the mainstream media have breathlessly declared the protest an insurrection after they spent months calling the violent George Floyd riots “mostly peaceful protests.” These are neither honest nor credible people.

One must also remember that the original cause of the protests on the 6th—the belief among tens of millions of Trump supporters that there was significant electoral fraud in the 2020 election—has not been adequately addressed or dealt with by our rulers at all. Indeed, the violence that happened has given them a perfect excuse to avoid doing anything about that problem.

A cynic, therefore, would be apt to interpret the decision to close off the Washington Monument as just one more act on the part of an insular ruling class to wall itself off from the population that it ostensibly represents. It’s almost like they know they did something wrong and are scrambling to avoid taking responsibility for it.
