On an Instagram live streaming event, New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez confirmed to her viewers that there are indeed discussions going on about possible “truth and reconciliation” commissions meant to re-educate Trump supporters.
Orwell Rolls in His Grave
When asked about plans to create what can only be described as re-education camps for Trump supporters and other recalcitrants who are not happy with the current Progressive regime that dominates virtually everything in American politics, she responded, “I can say there is absolutely a commission being discussed, but it seems to be more investigatory in style rather than truth and reconciliation.”
She described this skin-crawlingly creepy notion as “an interesting concept for us to explore.”
A ruling class always finds concepts that help it stay in power “interesting,” doesn’t it?
What Is Truth?
AOC went on to say, “It’s one thing to have differentiating opinions, but it’s another thing entirely to just say things that are false.”
But of course, discovering the truth about things is rarely ever a simple matter. Who gets to decide what is “true” and what is “false?”
Those with the power to control what kind of information the public is exposed to can make anything they want into “truth” or “falsehood.” It can become “true” that President Trump led an “armed insurrection” on January 6, and it can become “false” that he urged his supporters that day to “peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard” — even though there is a video of him saying exactly that.
It can become “true” that no election fraud ever occurred in 2020 and all claims of it have been “debunked,” and it can become “false” that election workers in Georgia pulled suitcases full of ballots out from under tables in the dead of night and repeatedly ran them through scanners — even though there is security camera footage of them doing exactly that.
Real truth is only ever arrived at through a never-ending process of argument and dialectic, where contrary perspectives and claims are compared, argued over and synthesized. It’s not something that any authority — whether politicians like AOC or so-called “fact-checkers” at the AP — can simply declare into existence.
But make no mistake: People like AOC want to make truth into a product of power. They want to make truth into whatever those in authority say that it is.
Why They Are Doing This
The ultimate basis of any political regime — especially an unjust political regime — is always propaganda. Without the ability to control information and prevent people from being able to have certain thoughts, sooner or later, the base of that regime’s power grows weak and begins to crumble. It’s impossible to rule by force alone.
By contrast, governments that are civilized, that care about the rights of their citizens and that are meant to promote some vision of the common good rather than to merely protect the interests of a ruling class should not worry about the existence of perspectives contrary to the ruling class’ own line on things.
The fact of the matter is the only people who should be worried about controlling the flow of information are liars with something to hide.
That’s why they’re so afraid. That’s why we’re hearing such frightfully Orwellian talk from the likes of AOC.
