Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is once again under fire after she traveled to the nation’s capital on Wednesday. Ignoring her own advice to her constituents to stay home, Whitmer traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend the inauguration of President Joe Biden. Whitmer has repeatedly told her constituents to not travel because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
In a statement released prior to Inauguration Day, Whitmer said that it was her honor to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Whitmer’s spokesperson, Tiffany Brown, did not confirm whether the governor traveled commercially or on a private plane. However, she did say that Whitmer took all of the recommended COVID-19 precautions.
Criticisms of Whitmer
The governor was immediately criticized for her decision to travel while telling others to stay home. GOP consultant Tori Sachs tweeted that the governor thought it was acceptable to travel but will not allow her state’s residents to dine indoors. Even Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser told people to watch the inauguration festivities from their homes rather than traveling to the city to participate.
Not First Time Whitmer Has Been at Center of Controversy
This is not the first time that Whitmer has been admonished for her hypocrisy. During the first few months of the COVID-19 crisis, Whitmer put her state under strict lockdown. Just one month later, Whitmer was a participant in the Black Lives Matter protests, marching alongside others with little social distancing measures put in place. She defended her actions, saying that she felt it was important to show that she stood in unity with the protestors.
