National Guardsmen were mobilized from across the country to provide security at the U.S. Capitol for the presidential inauguration. These troops dropped everything to answer to call for their country. However, their country did not return the favor by fulfilling their obligation to the troops. These soldiers were left to fend for themselves and forced to sleep in parking garages. In some cases, they were even denied permission to use restrooms as they needed them.
Tossed Out After the Photo-Ops
Of course, that did not stop politicians from trying to take advantage of the optics by using these soldiers as props in their propaganda pictures. However, once the cameras were off, the Guardsmen got the shaft in being subject to squalid conditions. Hundreds of them even contracted COVID-19 due to the conditions.
Soon after Nancy Pelosi made a big public deal about thanking the troops, they were betrayed by Democrats controlling Capitol security. The Guardsmen were given no explanation for their treatment. They were only thrown out of the building after being used for a show of power before the presidential inauguration. Republican leaders in Congress have demanded answers from Pelosi. However, she has not responded to legitimate concerns about the comfort and safety of the National Guardsmen.
Even Democrats Were Disgusted
Even some Democrats in Congress have expressed disgust at the shabby treatment of the troops. Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) even went so far as to offer the use of her office for troops to get a better night’s sleep. This is probably just the first sign that things have changed now that Donald Trump is no longer in the White House. Troops and veterans will no longer be treated with the respect that they previously received when serving under Trump.
