The impeachment and conviction of a former President has never happened in the history of the United States, with former President Donald Trump becoming the first-ever former President to face trial in the Senate.

Many Republicans deem this trial to be unconstitutional, as such a case has never happened before.

However, some are starting to believe that the Democrats have effectively opened Pandora’s box, creating a precedent that any former, living President can be impeached and charged in the Senate for their actions committed whilst in office.

This leads to many people believing that former President Barack Obama should be impeached.

But why? What could Obama be impeached for?

There are a multitude of reasons as to why President Obama should face impeachment, and the fact that he didn’t face it at all in his two terms is rather shocking. One of the biggest examples, that can also apply to the current President Joe Biden, is his stance on international treaties.

During his time in office, President Obama threw the US into two international treaties illegally; those being the Paris Agreement and the Iran Nuclear Deal.

Why were these illegal?

Article 2, Section 2, Clause 2 of the United States Constitution describes how the US can enter treaties, stating that the President will have the power for these actions, provided they achieve a 2/3rds majority in the Senate for consent to the treaty.

Neither of these treaties were ratified by the Senate, and nor was President Biden’s resigning of the Paris Agreement, giving legitimate grounds for the impeachment of both Presidents.

President Obama frequently found ways to get around the Constitution, making this next point even worse.

Obama was one of the biggest warmongers in American history, with the disastrous, illegal war in Libya being one of the most iconic moments in his presidency, for all the wrong reasons.

In the US, Congress needs to give the approval to allow a President to declare war against another nation, and Obama knew this.

He knew that Congress would never approve intervention in Libya, so he went to the United Nations to get their authorization to remove Colonel Ghaddafi from power.

The initiation of an illegal war is enough to impeach a President, however, Congress did nothing.

The biggest and most recent offense from President Obama involves the recently impeached President Trump.

Obama and spying

Obamagate became a massive scandal that involved huge coverups across the board.

The Obama administration took information received and funded by the Clinton campaign in order to spy on her opponent.

The ex-president administration knew that the information given was false and was taken from Russia, who actually wanted Hillary to beat Trump in 2016, but this was an idea that was suppressed by Obama’s CIA Director John Brennan.

In May 2020, declassified documents revealed that President Obama knew that his administration was spying on Trump’s incoming National Security Adviser, Michael Flynn, yet he failed to intervene to stop this illegal activity.

At the same time, Flynn’s direct communications with the then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak leaked to the press illegally to add more fuel to the fire of the false accusations of Russian collusion between the Russian State and the Trump campaign.

The evidence contained in these documents also shows that Obama knew about the wiretap placed on Flynn’s calls, much to the surprise of his then-Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates.

President Obama’s record is far from clean, which leads to many asking the question of pursuing impeachment against him.

Given all of the evidence of illegal activity committed by Obama and his administration, the Republicans have a strong case to build for impeaching the former President when they take back the house in 2022, with the precedent that has been set by the Democrats who are trying to convict an out-of-office President…maybe Obama should meet the same fate?
