On Thursday, Nancy Pelosi, the House of Representatives Speaker, condemned Representatives who want to utilize their right to hold weapons in the House.
She described these colleagues as enemies who are posing a threat to the U.S. by wanting to bring the weapons inside the Capitol building.
In Pelosi’s words, the threat certain Representatives pose is comparable to the threat presented by rioters in front of the Capitol building earlier this month.
The difference between the two threats Pelosi sees in the former being internal while the latter being external.
Extra security needed?
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Pelosi’s fellow Democrat in the House, seconded Pelosi’s worries about the gun-related lack of safety in the Congress.
The House Speaker pledged for the use of additional security resources in Congress as a measure to respond to dangers posed by certain congressmen.
It is not entirely clear which Representatives she had in mind, but some people that have been recently mentioned in the media are likely picks.
For example, it has been reported that Rep. Lauren Boebert, a Republican congresswoman from Colorado, asked for permission to bring her gun during the sessions.
Republican Representative Andy Harris of Maryland has even been put under investigation for the suspicion of unlawfully bringing a gun to the Capitol.
Harris is thought to have brought a gun that is unregistered in D.C., which is forbidden according to state laws.
Forgetting about Portland and Seattle riots
Many Twitter users reacted negatively to Pelosi’s statements.
Some of them called Pelosi and other Democrats (such as the members of the “Squad”) real enemies in the House.
One user even pointed to recent left-wing riots in cities such as Portland and Seattle, describing those who participated in these protests as the true enemies of the country.
In her address to the nation, Pelosi also delivered critical remarks against Former President Donald Trump.
She denounced Trump for inciting the insurrection and turning the members of the security of the Capitol against Representatives.
The House Speaker emphasized that Trump’s second impeachment trial expected to start soon is meant to protect the U.S. political order.
Pelosi concluded her address by saying that all measures will be taken to make the trial fair, with the principal aim of publicly showing that no one can be above the law, including the President of the United States.
