Haley Criticizes Trump in New Interview

Rising Republican star Nikki Haley tried to distance herself from former President Donald Trump on Monday during an interview with Politico. The former United Nations ambassador under Trump said that she tried to warn the president in 2017 that he needed to tone down his rhetoric because his words carried weight.

Haley Could Not Watch Trump Speech

During the interview, Haley said that she was “triggered” watching the president’s speech on January 6, just prior to the riots at the US Capitol. Haley said that she had to turn off the speech because of the verbiage being used, especially the hate being directed at former Vice President Mike Pence.

Haley went on to say that she was “deeply disturbed” by how Trump acted following the 2020 election, saying that he was not the man who she once got to know.

Thoughts on Impeachment

While she is clear in her displeasure with the former president, Haley said that she does not support the move to impeach him. She said that it was a waste of time since Trump is not likely to run for office again.

High Political Aspirations

In addition to serving as ambassador to the UN, Haley also was once the governor of South Carolina. It was in this role that she catapulted onto the national political scene as one of the Republican Party’s most promising young leaders. It has been long rumored that Haley has her eyes set on a potential 2024 run at the presidency.

The 48-year-old is trying to distinguish herself from the pool of rumored hopefuls, including Donald Trump, Jr., Sen. Ted Cruz, and Sen. Mitt Romney.
