Lindsay Graham Details Recent Conversation With Trump
Sen. Lindsay Graham said that he recently spoke with former President Donald Trump, gaining an insight into his current state of mind after his impeachment trial acquittal on Saturday. Graham said that Trump is “ready to move on” and put the trial behind him while focusing his efforts on the 2022 election. While Graham said that Trump does bear a degree of responsibility for riling up the base after the presidential election, the ranking member of the Senate said that Trump’s speech was protected under the First Amendment.
Interview With Fox News
Graham’s comments came during a Sunday interview with Fox News. During the interview, Graham said that he is going to visit Trump next week to discuss a strategy for the 2022 mid-terms.
Graham also confirmed that Trump is angry with some people in the Republican Party for not taking a stronger stand against the effort to impeach him.
For example, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell did not vote to convict Trump; however, he made a speech at the end of the trial that suggested that the former president should be subject to criminal prosecution. This leaves the door open for other Republicans to try to distance themselves from Trump as they move toward 2022.
How Will Republican Moves Play Out in 2022
Graham said that McConnell’s speech on the Senate floor will play out during the 2022 election. There are numerous states that the Republicans will be looking to take back in the Senate with the next election. Graham believes that Republicans will have to answer for going against Trump during the impeachment proceedings.
