Republican Rep. Doug Lamborn of Colorado is warning that his party will do everything that it can to prevent the Democrats from repealing the Hyde Amendment. The promise to use “every tool in the legislative arsenal” came after President Joe Biden continues to assert that his administration will repeal this crucial amendment in the fight to ban abortions.

What Is the Hyde Amendment?

The Hyde Amendment is a law that bans the use of federal funding for abortions. The only exceptions are when abortion is needed to save the life of the mother or if the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest. This legislation has been in place since 1976. Because of the law, funds from Medicaid cannot cover abortion costs, even if the medical care providers recommend that the woman needs an abortion.

Lamborn’s Call to Action

Lamborn’s call to action was detailed in a letter to Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. The letter was signed by over 80 Republican members of Congress. Lamborn specifically called out a comment made by Connecticut Rep. Rosa DeLauro at a hearing on the amendment last December. The Democrat called the Hyde Amendment a “discriminatory policy,” saying that this will be the last year that it will be in place.

Biden’s Change of Opinion

Up until 2019, Biden supported the Hyde Amendment. It was not until he had to court the left-leaning wing of the Democratic Party during his run for the presidency that he had to change course on his opinion of repealing the amendment. Even his own current vice president called him out for flip-flopping his stance on the matter.
